Tag Aliases
A tag alias makes one tag automatically become another. It is how duplicate spellings of the same idea get merged.
If @blonde@ is aliased to @blonde_hair@, then anyone who types @blonde@ gets @blonde_hair@ instead, on both uploads and searches. The old tag keeps working as a shortcut forever.
When an alias is right
Use an alias when two tags mean exactly the same thing:
- different spellings — @grey_hair@ and @gray_hair@,
- singular and plural — @cat@ and @cats@,
- an abbreviation and its full form,
- an artist's old handle and their new one.
If one tag is a kind of the other rather than the same as it, you want a tag implication instead.
Requesting one
Aliases affect every post at once, so they go through a bulk update request and are applied by a moderator.
